Our favourite walks and roasts in North Devon

One of the best ways to experience North Devon is on foot — especially when there’s a proper roast waiting at the end. Coastal paths, quiet lanes and tucked-away villages make this area perfect for pairing walks with warm pubs and good food.

Here are three of our favourite walk-and-roast combinations — well-loved, well-earned, and best enjoyed slowly.

Bucks Mills Walk & The Farmers Arms

Bucks Mills is one of those places that feels like a secret. A steep wooded valley drops down to a quiet pebble beach, with the South West Coast Path weaving along the cliffs above.

The walk can be as gentle or as challenging as you like — wander through the old mill cottages, head down to the beach, or follow the coast path towards Clovelly for bigger views and sea air.

Afterwards, The Farmers Arms is the perfect reward. A traditional pub with a welcoming atmosphere and a seriously good roast, it’s the kind of place where muddy boots are expected and nobody’s in a rush to leave.

Why we love it:

Woodland paths, dramatic coastline and a classic North Devon pub at the finish.

Morwenstow Coast Path & The Bush Inn

The Morwenstow coastline feels wild in the best possible way. Rugged cliffs, open skies and crashing waves make this stretch of the coast path unforgettable, especially on a clear day.

Walks here offer big views and a real sense of space. The paths can be uneven, so good footwear is essential — but the effort is always worth it, especially if you make it to Hawkers Hut!

When it’s time to refuel, The Bush Inn is a firm favourite. Known for generous portions and hearty roasts, it’s exactly what you want after a blustery coastal walk.

Why we love it:

Epic scenery, fewer crowds and a roast that genuinely hits the spot.

Abbotsham Cliffs & The Thatch, Abbotsham

For something a little gentler, the walk around Abbotsham Cliffs offers peaceful paths, rolling countryside and sweeping views across Bideford Bay.

This is a brilliant option if you want coastal views without the big climbs. The area feels calm and spacious, perfect for an easy-going afternoon walk.

Finish at The Thatch in Abbotsham, a cosy village pub known for its relaxed atmosphere and excellent Sunday carvery. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger — fire lit, plates full and nowhere else to be.

Why we love it:

Easy walking, big skies and a truly cosy pub at the end.
